As the lady says, "So what if Obama was Muslim, or an Arab, since when is this a disqualifier for office in the US?" Well, the problem of course runs much deeper and unfortunately the embers of ignorance, intolerance and incredible indecency are alway fanned into flames by political groups with an agenda.

In this case, it's the McCain campaign continuously making a connection from Obama to Osama that is causing the current wave of problems, even to the point that McCain has had to correct his own supporters by stating that Obama is a good man.

Naturally, these people wouldn't be so easy to get going if they weren't so steeply buried in prejudice and hatred to begin with.  Just this week, a friend of my family was in my living room and he pronounced that "there is no way I'm gonna vote for that nigger. I don't care what people say, I'm sure he's a Muslim that's hiding out to take over America from the inside."

A college associate of my 23 year old nephew also made the statement that if Obama was to be elected, the country would "slide straight into communism."  Even my nephew was completely uninformed in this matter. He stated that "Obama wouldn't visit the troops because it wasn't a photo op and he doesn't wear the flag because he doesn't believe in the Constitution."

In two of these cases, I almost jumped out of my skin.  Then I jumped on their asses.  The only one to escape my ignorance correcting wrath was my nephew's pal. He was lucky enough to be overheard by another relative who quickly advised him to not repeat what he just said in front of me because it would have been something like Mao's "re-education" for the rest of the night.

In the matter of the family friend, he's in his late 50's, early 60's and he has always been politically left leaning, or so I thought. His tirade has me so disturbed that I was considering telling him that I am unable to attend a dinner function at his home later this week because I just cannot support this kind of thinking by him.

But, that would be just as narrow in thinking as he is wouldn't it. Instead, I am going to go to the dinner and I am going to bring up his views and I am going to gently prode and poke to make him provide supporting evidence for his statements (except for his racially based labels, which I can only hope he chooses to see the appalling impact that has on people).  This has been my tactic with several people I know over the past few months and it has had some success (about 70%) at making them put their argument where their brain is.

If they aren't able to back up their wild accusations and assumptions with any evidence other than a chain email that started from imaracistpigsobfromsc@whitepride.net then they know that I know they are on some darn thin ice when they repeat their crap to me or to others.
